Evelyn (Shoemaker) Leary 95 of East Haven passed away May 5, 2017 at CT Hospice in Branford. She was born April 11, 1922 in New Haven to Joseph and Mae (Sullivan) Shoemaker. Evelyn is survived by her two loving sons, John “Jack” Leary (Delia) of East Haven and James “Jim” Leary (Agnes) of East Haven along with 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Lynn Willard, brother, Robert Shoemaker and sister, Helen Liebenson. Evelyn was a special education teacher in the New Haven School District finishing at Fairhaven Middle School. She belonged to the Catholic Charity League, volunteered at the Orchard House and with the American Red Cross. She was also the swimming instructor at Short Beach and Hotchkiss Grove Beach. Family will receive friends from 4 to 7 PM on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at the Clancy-Palumbo Funeral Home (Clancy Funeral Home) 43 Kirkham Ave., East Haven. Funeral procession will leave Clancy-Palumbo Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 10 at 9:30 AM for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 65 Burban Dr. Branford with Committal to follow at All Saints Cemetery in North Haven. Donations may be made to The Orchard House, 421 Shore Dr., Branford CT 06405 in memory of Evelyn S. Leary.
