Obituary of Doug Markey

Please share a memory of Doug to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
On February 28, 2017, at St. Raphael’s Hospital, Douglas Siering Markey, 64, of New Haven, unexpectedly began his journey down the winding road to immortality. He was born May 12, 1952 in New Haven, CT to James Edward Markey and Katherine Horn Markey. Douglas is survived by his mother, Katherine Horn Markey, his loving wife and soul-mate of 33 years, Janice Russell Markey, two daughters; Kathryn Markey Lundgren, of Middletown, RI and Rachel Markey of Burlington, VT and son-in-law Benjamin Lundgren, of Middletown, RI. Doug was a self-taught master craftsman, carpenter, maverick, and a true MacGyver. There was no job too big or too small for him to tackle. Thinking outside the box was his way to solve any problem and create a solution. As an all-around motor enthusiast, mechanic and perfectionist, Doug enjoyed restoring and customizing over 10 cars, including a Mazda Miata, and over 10 vintage British and Japanese motorcycles. He collected over 100 trophies, plaques and bowls at numerous shows across the East Coast. His most recent endeavor was acquiring and restoring a 1980’s HMV Freeway, a three-wheeled microcar. Doug not only enjoyed mechanical projects, he also was an artist, model maker, designer and creator of an array of Halloween costumes. For over 10 years he greatly enjoyed being the beloved “Pumpkin Man”, a staple of the annual Morris Cove Halloween Parade. Additionally, he was a nature lover and protector of all creatures big and small, including a pet crow which he adopted for over 23 years. He was always taking in wounded or stray animals and caring for them with compassion and love. He shared his love of nature with his daughters and showed them how to live simply and love genuinely. Doug will forever be remembered for his kindness to all and dedication to caring for those he loved. Family will receive friends on Sunday, March 5, 2017 from 1 PM until the time of service at 3 PM at the Clancy-Palumbo Funeral Home, 43 Kirkham Ave., East Haven. Burial will be private at Evergreen Cemetery in New Haven. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Morris Cove Halloween Parade in memory of Doug Markey, the “Pumpkin Man”. Donations can be addressed to the ESMT (East Shore Management Team), 21 Anthony Drive, New Haven, CT, 06512.
