I went to St Mary's High School and graduated in 1970. Who didn't know Mr. Merkus? He appeared to me at that time, a quiet, gentle man. That was what I remembered of him: a constant in an ever tumultuous world. On those rough days of teenage years, and honestly not being the best behaved of students, his kind "hello" was more than enough to get me through.
I was glad to have known him in this very small way and happier still to have remembered.
